Weather in Turin: Seasons, Events and Travel Tips for Every Month

The first thing you must know about the weather in Turin is that it can go from cold to hot, depending on the seasons and months. So you better know before traveling which temperatures you will face here to plan your itinerary wisely and pack properly.

Before moving to Turin, I lived in cities and countries that had only two seasons, most hot and humid. In Turin, I learned to like cold days and I was enchanted by the changing of seasons.

Rest assured that Turin weather is nice all year round – depending on what you want to experience. The capital of Piedmont has its four seasons well-defined, so it’s good to look a little deeper into each one to decide the best time to visit Turin for you.

How is the weather in Turin, Italy?

The climate in Turin is moderately continental (or general Mediterranean). It means that summers are warm, sunny, and humid. Winters are cold and damp, and it can get cloudy the rest of the year.

It doesn’t sound very promising, I know, but I can tell you the city is gorgeous every season. You only need to be well prepared with clothes, an umbrella or sunscreen.

Turin is located an hour by train from Milan. It’s at the foot of the Alps, 800 feet (around 250 mt) above sea level. Due to this position, it doesn’t get as hot in the summer or as foggy in the winter as in the rest of the Po Valley, in Northern Italy.

Temperatures in Turin fluctuate between 31°F/0°C to 84°F/29°C, rarely going over 90°F/33°C or under 24°F/-5°C.

Does it snow in Turin?

Well, it does, but not as much as in the past. While living here I have witnessed a couple of days of snow. The snowy period doesn’t last long in the city center, but if you go to the villages around you will see houses, forests, and mountains covered in white.

The best time to visit Turin by seasons

It’s hard to tell you the best time to visit Turin because each season or month brings a different experience. I can tell you this because while living here I have been experiencing all the seasons, sun and rain, cold and hot.

If you like skiing, come in winter. Are you a photography enthusiast? I would recommend visiting Turin in Autumn. If you enjoy visiting historical sites with not many people around, come in the summer.

You see, there are many possibilities to enjoy Turin in different months of the year, and we are not even talking about events and activities happening here. Turin’s event calendar is packed with concerts, festivals, fairs, sports and religious activities, and many more.

Summer in Turin, Italy

It’s gelato time! To be fair it always is, but from June to August, you get the warmest season in Turin, and gelato or granita is a must.

It is hot, usually sunny, and a bit muggy but totally bearable. Expect some rain and thunderstorms, especially in the evenings.

The temperatures during Turin Summers range from 77°F/25°C to 82°F/28°C with a weak wind to cool off.

As the song says: “Summertime and the livin’ is easy”, and in Italy, it wouldn’t be any different. So make sure to enjoy the parks, open-air events in Turin, as well as the bohemian bar scene along the Po River (where aperitivos await!).

Exploring the city on foot in the hottest months will be delightful. Just remember to put sunscreen on, and grab an umbrella. Expect the hottest temperatures from midday to 3 pm.

Local tip: June 2nd is Republic Day, a public holiday. It’s a great time to be in Turin, watch the street celebration and the traditional Frecce Tricolori, the Italian Air Force aerobatic demonstration.

Winter in Turin, Italy

From ice-creams, we’ll go straight to the coldest months and least rainy season! As a classic European city, Turin weather during the winter is cloudy and dank. And, of course, cold.

There’s fog and a moderate amount of rainy days, but the sun still shines now and then. And when it shines Turin looks stunning with the Alps surrounding the city covered in snow, it looks like a painting.

Snow falls at least once a year, though it isn’t abundant (around 10 in/25 cm per year). January tends to be the coldest and darkest month.

But how cold is the winter in Turin?

Temperatures in Turin winter can shift a lot from daytime to nighttime, going from 44°F/7°C to 28°F/-2°C.

When the föhn wind blows from the Alps, temperatures may rise to 59°F/15°C. On the other hand, while rarer, Eastern Europe’s cold air masses can drop temperatures to new extremes, as in February 2012, when thermometers marked 7°F/-14°C! That’s what I call a cold season!

But no matter how cold it is outside, there are many things to do in Turin in winter, like visiting palaces and museums, trying delicious local food and wine, and enjoying winter sports at ski resorts near Turin.

Also, there are Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations in December, and St. Valentine’s Day in February, so there’ll be plenty to do to keep you happy and warm.

Spring in Turin, Italy

Oh, the spring! Sunshine, flowers, birds singing… it’s such a beautiful season. However so, spring in Turin can be a bit unstable. Mild days (and warmer nights) alternate with chilly ones. Always have a jacket with you, and thank me later!

Thunderstorms can break out in the evenings or even in the afternoon – that umbrella will be handy here! In the period from March to May, you’ll find temperatures between 55°F/13°C and 68°F/20°C. May normally is the wettest month in Turin, but it’s a beautiful time to visit the city.

Despite its swings, the spring is an invitation to go hiking on the hills nearby or enjoy the outdoor bars if that’s enough adventure for you.

 Autumn in Turin, Italy

I’m a summer girl, but Autumn is my favorite season in Turin. The trees, parks and the whole city turn into a marvelous blend of yellow, red, and copper. As the leaves fall, the temperatures also drop preparing everyone for the winter.

Autumn in Turin begins with nice days that progressively turn into gray, misty, and rainy days. But don’t be scared by my description, fall is an incredibly nice season to visit Turin and there are a lot of things happening in the city at this time of the year.

The temperatures oscillate between 73°F/23°C and 62°F/17°C during the day. and it goes down to 53°F/12°C and 34°F/10°C at night. The cold itself usually comes by November.

Autumn in Turin invites you to contemplate the foliage that beautifully changes the city’s colors. You can witness the harvesting of wine grapes, visit the vineyard in the Langhe region, or do a wine tasting tour in the city.
