The Shroud of Turin Display 2025 – Is it happening or not?

We all hoped for a public display of the Holy Shroud in 2025, the Jubilee Year for the Catholic Church. But as much as we wanted to get close to the burial shroud, the news is that the Shroud of Turin display in 2025 will not happen as we dreamed of.

However, there are two special ways to get closer to the holy relic this year.

In 2024, the Vatican announced that the Turin Shroud public viewing would happen in 2025. But the latest news from the Archbishop of Turin, Monsignor Roberto Repole, made it clear that a physical display like the previous exhibitions won’t happen. Instead, the church is organizing a digital display of the Turin Shroud, and you can be part of a virtual pilgrimage.

All you need to know about the Shroud of Turin display in 2025

The virtual pilgrimage is happening in May 2025 – official display dates have not been announced yet. The good news is that everyone worldwide, including you, will be able to see, pray, and reflect in front of what is believed to be the Jesus Shroud.

New digital tools are being developed to widen access to the Shroud, so the shroud image and history of Jesus’s burial cloth can be available to a global audience. You can already watch a series of videos about the Shroud on the official Shroud website, the websites of the Archdiocese of Turin, and vativision.com.

The 2025 Jubilee and the Shroud of Turin display

On May 3rd, Pope Francis will join an online meeting with young Catholics from the dioceses of Turin and Susa. This special event will take place in front of the Shroud and will wrap up a series of catechesis sessions. It’s all part of the Turin Church’s efforts to celebrate the Jubilee 2025 and connect with the younger generation.

Then, on May 4th, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Patriarch of Jerusalem, alongside Archbishop Repole will lead a mass at Duomo di Turin – Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist. This Mass will mark the liturgical feast of the Shroud and take place at Turin Cathedral.

On the same evening, Cardinal Pizzaballa will meet with the general public to share his experiences and challenges in the Holy Land. The meeting will happen at the Sanctuary of Consolata.

Beyond the Turin Shroud virtual display and the two masses, there is one more innovation around the Turin Shroud exhibition this year.

Should you travel to Italy to see the Turin Shroud?

The Shroud of Turin display cancelation was a bucket of cold water on many faithful travel plans. But do not cancel your travel plan yet.

Additionally to the Shroud of Turin virtual display, there will be a “Tent of the Shroud” in the central area of Turin.

Piazza Castello will host a tented space offering exhibitions, films, documents, and debates about the Shroud’s facts and religious significance. So residents and visitors can learn about the Shroud, its history, and its meaning.

“The Shroud is not only a treasure of the Church but also a part of Turin and Piedmont’s cultural heritage, where it has been safeguarded for centuries,” Archbishop Repole emphasized during a press conference.

More than visiting the “Tent of the Shroud”, when traveling to Turin, you can be really close to the linen cloth that holds the faint image of Jesus’s body. You can pray in front of it, visit its museum, and above all, feel how special this controversial relic is.

How to visit the Holy Shroud in Turin in 2025?

Although the Shroud of Turin will not be physically displayed during the Jubilee Year as initially planned, we still have meaningful ways to connect with it.

Visiting the Holy Shroud Chapel in Turin

The Shroud is kept in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Turin (Duomo di Torino). While you can’t see the real shroud as it’s safeguarded behind bulletproof glass, you can sit and pray in front of where it’s kept. And believe me, it’s a unique experience.

As someone who lived in Turin, I had the opportunity to visit the Turin Cathedral and sit in front of the Holy Shroud many times, and each moment was a special one.

I wrote a guide about visiting the Holy Shroud in Turin’s Cathedral, you can read it here: Turin Shroud location and how you can visit it.

Turin Shroud Museum is worth visiting

Another option is to visit the Museo della Sindone in Turin, where you can see a full-size replica of the Shroud. It’s not a public exhibition of the shroud as we expected, but it gives you an idea of how powerful this piece of history is.

Plus, the exhibits talk about its origins, historical records, scientific analyses like carbon dating, and the numerous legends surrounding it. Interactive displays will give you a deeper understanding of the Shroud’s enduring mystery and its impact on art, religion, and culture.

If you can’t visit the Shroud Museum in Turin, no worries. Here is a complete guide about Turin Shroud facts that will give you a good insight into its history and significance, whether you are Catholic or not.

But if you make it to Turin, I strongly suggest you join the Tour on The Path of The Holy Shroud. It’s a 3-hour walking tour focused on the mystery behind the Turin Shroud and the complicated history of this enigmatic artifact.
